Description

Photo of a portrait painted by Charles Mills of Benjamin Abbot, 1762-1849. His biography reads "Teacher of Latin and Greek, he was principal of the Academy, 1788-1838. Abbot made Exeter a national school; he built the second Academy Building in 1794, and was the author of the often quoted dictum: 'The student should bear the laboring oar.' He was indeed the 'second founder of the institution.'"
