His biography reads "A graduate of Exeter and Harvard, he spent his life in the service of his country, as a soldier in the Spanish-American War, as diplomat in Engalnd, Italy, Belgium, and Japan. On his tomb are carved the words: 'Patriot, Diplomat, Soldier, and Loyal Friend.'"
