His biography reads "A native of New Hampshire, Hale came to the Academy in 1820 and continued his education at Bowdoin College. A renowned lawyer, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1843 and was Senator from New Hampshire, 1846-1863. He was appointed Minister to Spain in 1865."
