Photo of a portrait by Alfred E. Smith of William Woodbridge, 1755-1836. His biography reads "Educated at Yale, Woodbridge was appointed first Preceptor -- that is, first Principal -- of the Academy in 1783. A confirmed optimist, happiest with change and variety, he was not suited 'to found a lasting institution' and resigned in 1788."
